Individual weapon systems are now able to play a more substantial role in this, given recent advances in weapon sights, laser range finders and ballistic computers. 

Integrating the modern intelligence gathering (ISTAR) capabilities of the combat soldier, into an ability to prosecute targets more successfully, or to pass accurate target data to other team members / effectors so that they can do this, has never had a greater imperative.
