Welcome to our new ASW expert!

Armed Forces Corporate Covenant

It’s Armed Forces Week, a chance to show our support for the people who make up the Armed Forces community, from people currently serving to families, veterans and cadets. Ollie recently retired from the UK Royal Navy to join SEA as an ASW (Anti-Submarine Warfare) expert. We asked him a few questions to learn more about his career change:

Welcome to the team, Ollie! What made you join SEA?

“Thank you! SEA has given me the opportunity to use a unique set of skills that I'd developed over 12 years serving in the UK Royal Navy. In most cases I'd have had to retrain and although I still have a lot to learn about this new environment, a lot of my experience will help me to help SEA. Amongst all of that, being at SEA gives me the chance to balance my family and work life.”

How do you think your experience in the Navy will help shape your career at SEA?

“I served on Submarines and my primary role was as a Sonar Analyst. As SEA contributes to some of the equipment we used, I'm in a great position to help shape, develop and improve new and existing equipment.”

You only officially joined a few weeks ago, but some of us also got to meet you in February, how did that come about?

“I did that as part of my resettlement programme from the Royal Navy. Depending on the amount of time a service person has completed, they are entitled to certain benefits and time to retrain or take on work experience. I’m glad I did it, it confirmed I wanted to join SEA permanently. Everyone I’ve met has been really welcoming and supportive and I've been made to feel like an integral part of the team.”

What do you think your biggest challenge will be transitioning from the Navy to SEA?

“The Royal Navy has been a massive part of my life and I was stepping in to the unknown, so there was, and still is, a certain level of uncertainty associated with that. I’m still getting used to life in an office and working from home is a concept that was entirely alien to me! I’ve still got a lot to learn about how a business like this works, but like I’ve said, everyone has been supportive and have made it clear to speak up and ask whenever I'm not sure about something.”

What motivates you to come to work?

“The pace is slightly different than what I was used to, but the challenges are just as dynamic and exciting. The team I work with are driven, intuitive and focused on delivering great results. SEA is bringing out some new and interesting products, and I can't wait to be a part of a team that delivers them.”

How are you spending your days off?

“At the moment, I’m spending time with old friends, making up a bit of time that I missed whilst I’ve been away. I’ve also got a dog, Freddie, who I’m enjoying taking for walks and having more involvement with than before. I also enjoy Golf and using my newly fitted garage gym!”

Thanks Ollie, we hope you have a great future at SEA!
