Celebrating Edd this Armed Forces Week

23 Jun 2021

This Armed Forces Week, we are celebrating our colleagues who have served in the Armed Forces and asking them to look back on what they gained from their experience.

Edd joined the Submarine Service as a Communications Specialist and served for eight and a half years. In that time, he had three submarines: HMS Talent, HMS Tireless and HMS Triumph. During his service, he volunteered for an operational tour of Afghanistan as an Intelligence Analyst with the Intelligence Corps. He was also fortunate enough to take SEA’s new CCSM System to sea on work up on operations for the very first time

Since leaving the Submarine Service, it has been an interesting life for Edd. “I have learnt a lot and will continue to do so. There will always be elements that I miss about service life and there are some major differences, but I’m glad I still get to support the Submarine community through our work at SEA.”

Edd joined SEA as an Assistant Project Manager within the Communication division and moved across to the Research and Technical team last year. He brought with him a wealth of experience and knowledge taken from his time in the Submarine Service. His key to success is perseverance, an attribute that can be applied to his role at SEA or at home as a husband and father. “I always like to keep in the back of my mind when I’m undertaking a particularly challenging task that I’m not on a steel tube thousands of miles away from home and I’ll see everyone later!”

Edd’s time in the Submarine Service taught him discipline and patience, but also gave him an appreciation of the Maritime Warfare environment. To undertake his role at SEA, it is invaluable to know why we need certain products and how we can best help the Royal Navy and its allies perform the best under the pressure of operations. “It is a really interesting time in maritime defence, which will see new and interesting challenges globally and in turn for us [SEA]. I’m excited to be a part of it!”
