Fifty years. It’s a milestone few reach in one company, and one that speaks volumes about dedication, resilience, and passion for the work you do. In September 1975, Neil Herbert entered the  shop floor as an Apprentice, unaware that his journey would become an extraordinary five-decade legacy that helped shape the company we are today.

As SEA celebrates Neil’s 50th work anniversary, we reflect on his journey through transformation, growth, challenge, and global success.

From Apprentice to Global Success

Neil’s story began on the shop floor, turning 1,000 washers on a lathe. It was patient, detailed work that laid the foundation for a career defined by problem-solving and precision. “I fell for all the classic tricks back then,” Neil recalls with humour. “Being sent for a ‘long weight’ or a ‘sky hook’... not exactly part of the job description, but it built character!”

From those early days, Neil’s career followed a steady upward trajectory. After completing his apprenticeship, he moved into Inspection, then Project Management, eventually helping SEA secure its very first Post Design Services contract for sonar equipment. That small team went on to win more work, build new capabilities, and lay the foundations of what would become SEA’s thriving support business.

Resilience Through Change

As the company evolved through name changes, restructurings, and ownership transitions, Neil remained constant. “There have been many ups and downs in the industry, and I’ve survived them all,” he notes, “but what kept me going was always the people and the purpose.”

Whether leading the Minor Sonars group, being embedded into the Thales SSOP team at Abbeywood, or transforming key support programmes into a flagship success, Neil has been instrumental in SEA’s evolution. His impact reached beyond delivery, and he helped shape SEA’s reputation as a reliable and customer-focused partner.

A Global Ambassador for SEA

In 2010 Neil took on SEA’s pursuit into the Canadian market. What began as monthly trips across the Atlantic quickly became a full-blown expansion effort, culminating in the formation of SEA Canada (formerly JSK Naval Support) and, ultimately, SEA’s award of the multi-million-pound CSC contract. As Neil jokes, “I was there so often, some people even thought I was Canadian!” But whether in Canada or North Devon, he remained committed to SEA’s success.

Neil also led SEA’s introduction into South America, following several small contract wins Chile. Chasing opportunities and representing SEA at major defence exhibitions helped SEA secure equipment contracts for several major frigate and upgrade programmes, building a strong presence and representation across the continent.

A Legacy of Loyalty and People

Neil’s journey with SEA isn’t just about contracts or career progression, it’s about people. Time and again, he credits the teams he’s worked with, the colleagues who became friends, and the shared determination to build something to last.

“From turning washers in 1975 to negotiating international contracts, I’ve seen this company change many times. But the one thing that’s never changed is the spirit of the people who work here.”

Richard Flitton, Managing Director of SEA commented: "Neil’s contribution to SEA over the last 50 years is nothing short of extraordinary. His expertise, his leadership through change, and his tireless pursuit of opportunity have not only helped shape our business but have inspired generations of colleagues. Few people leave a legacy this long and Neil truly represents the best of SEA."

That spirit of adaptability, and teamwork is embodied in Neil himself and on behalf of everyone at SEA and our wider network of partners, customers, and colleagues: thank you. Your journey is a testament to what’s possible when talent meets tenacity, and when values guide every step of the way.

Here’s to your legacy and to the next chapter!
