Armed Forces Week 2020 - Michael

This Armed Forces Week, we are celebrating our colleagues who have served in the Armed Forces. Here is a bit about Michael . . .

Michael joined the Royal Navy 3 days after he left school. After passing Basic and Marine Engineering Training, he volunteered for Submarine service. Aged 17, he passed the Nuclear Propulsion Course and completed his submarine escape training before joining HMS Spartan, a nuclear-powered hunter-killer submarine commissioned in 1979.

After initial testing, Michael spent several months each year running out of Port Canaveral, Florida. Other roles including searching for soviet ballistic missile submarines, finding and following them; all without being detected. Michael spent 7 years on HMS Spartan.

“Forty years later, the crew still hold a reunion every year. We have sadly lost 44 out of the original crew of 110. This year we have had one crew member recover from Covid-19, so the celebrations will be extra special. SEA recently made a recent donation to the Charity "We Remember Submariners" which is a group formed by ex-submariners to raise money to ensure that every service person has a Submariner’s wreath at their funeral, and their family receive a special memorial pin. Our shipmate Dave had such a wreath at his funeral recently, so the former crew of HMS Spartan would like to thank SEA for their contribution.”

During Armed Forces Week and every other week, we salute you.
